I love the CatGenie. The washable, plastic granules are one of the best things about the CatGenie. You'll never have to buy litter again! It doesn't make any dust! Zero! The granules are big enough to pick up off the floor. They're big enough to sit on top of a carpet or rug, and not get ground in. They look kind of like someone took a big piece of plastic spaghetti and chopped it up - it's kind of oval-shaped, so it won't roll around on the floor, and the sides are flat. They are much easier to clean up off any type of floor than regular cat litter. It's wonderful!

At first, the cats didn't know quite what to make of it. So, you have to be patient. Set up your catgenie in the bathroom or the laundry room, but keep their litterbox nearby. I let the old litterbox get a little "dirty" and my cat who is extremely tidy began using the catgenie. The old litterbox has gone away with the garbage truck. Now, the cats seem to enjoy watching the catgenie go through its cleaning cycle. Definitely worth the money as it has saved me time and my sanity.

I waited about three months before writing this review because I want to be knowledgeable about the product and use it for a while before I start sharing my opinion about it. First impressions can sometimes be misleading (everybody is always so wowed by things the first time they see it, and many people's frustrations that pop up while originally setting up or programming the machine can also negatively impact the end result). So here comes my little review.
I ordered this machine online (The one with dome and 3 cartridges), and got it delivered within three days. One of the boxes was cumbersome, and everything inside was a very tight fit. It comes with everything you need to start using it from granules to cleaning solutions (but you must provide your own cat: there just isn't enough room in that tight box to include one, and it might not like the shipping). Setting up the machine itself was not a big deal. If you can assemble legos, this should be easy. Harder might be for you to connect it to the water line, so if you're not comfortable with that, call someone who is. It is not that complicated, but I do construction work as a hobby and I can see people disconnecting their toilet, having leaks and not being able to use their commode for a while, especially if they live in an older house (So instead of having clean cat litter, you end up with a big human mess - not good!). Programming was a little more complicated, because it is not intuitive. An LCD screen is cheap these days, and might be a good addition for the next generation. After reading the instruction manual, however, it became a bit easier, if still not the greatest experience. For one, I don't know how a power outage would affect the programming, as I have no way of checking it. Also, since you must program the machine at the exact time you would like for it to wake up, it could be a problem as well. That being said, I now use the Cat Genie as an alarm clock. My bedroom is above the kitchen where I set this up, and that's the first thing I noticed upon its first use: it is noisy!!! I don't know if additional insulation would help or not, but something could probably be done about it. The cycle is also excruciatingly long (over 20 minutes). I don't know if shorter cycles would work, as I'm sure the people at Cat Genie have tested and tried many different settings before manufacturing their machine, but when you're in the kitchen and the cat decides to go, you're in for a concert of flushing, drying, whirling and knocking that will drown your senses! I'm exaggerating a little, but it is a bit on the loud side.
Using the Cat Genie has been the best experience so far, as I have strictly nothing to do anymore. I have 3 cats who took up to it in less than 24 hours. They go, most of the time one after the next, and then 10 minutes after the last cat has gone (it is smart that way), the Cat Genie springs into action. Twice a day or so, I need to flush the toilet it is linked to so that it evacuates everything (not a pretty sight!), and once in a blue moon, I need to add a few granules to replenish it. The granules do cling to cats, and you find them a little bit everywhere, but no more than regular litter which used to make my kitchen look like the Sahara Desert, with dunes and all. But best of all, I have not scooped up cat s$#@^t in the last three months.
So while I think the unit is a bit noisy, it wasn't too hard to install, was fairly simple to program, has been simpler yet to maintain and has made my cats happy (and me too!)
